Choices and Responsibilities: A Human Centric Approach to University-Industry Knowledge Transfer
The paper reflects on the growing complexities of management education in which business practitioners invite selected academic institutions to develop partnerships for resolving practical challenges and equipping those in the workplace to make more reflective and enlightened choices. European examples from Cambridge and Nottingham illustrate that successful industry and academic collaborations embody long-established themes of mentor-mentee, master-learner relationships. This human centric approach yields personal characteristics for reflective practitioners which enhance innovation, productivity and reputation building. The examples presented in this paper are then placed in a broader university – industry knowledge transfer context, using a so-called ‘bow tie’ model.
The authors believe that by shifting the attention from processes to people, from productivity to individual and collective growth and maturity, and by starting to apply the best practices of our human heritage we can make a difference. It is the responsibility of all stakeholders of education to support and contribute to this shift
Managing Education Policy in Globalised Knowledge -based Societies: Lessons from Hungary
Increased flows of information and the enhanced use of information, computer and telecommunication (ICT) technologies are seen as having major implications for those managing education and training policies, especially within resource scarce transitional economies. After reviewing a number of characteristics associated with progressively globalised and knowledge-based societies and relevant to educational/training initiatives, the Hungarian experience is considered in some detail. This analysis prompts a more focused debate on the effective management of educational and training policies in contemporary societies, especially those engaged in transition. Although the growth of knowledge based societies would seem to be imposing a relatively uniform set of challenges for education/training managers in all modern economies, effective implementation of these policies arguably demands a degree of customisation to account for the particular socio-cultural contexts existing within Hungary and the other transition economies
The third dimension of scoliosis: The forgotten axial plane
Idiopathic scoliosis is a three-dimensional (3D) deformity of the spine. In clinical practice, however, the diagnosis and treatment of scoliosis consider only two dimensions (2D) as they rely solely on postero-anterior (PA) and lateral radiographs. Thus, the projections of the deformity are evaluated in only the coronal and sagittal planes, whereas those in the axial plane are disregarded, precluding an accurate assessment of the 3D deformity. A universal dogma in engineering is that designing a 3D object requires drawing projections of the object in all three planes. Similarly, when dealing with a 3D deformity, knowledge of the abnormalities in all three planes is crucial, as each plane is as important as the other two planes. Nonlinear photoluminescence spectra from a quantum dot-cavity system: Direct evidence of pump-induced stimulated emission and anharmonic cavity-QED
We investigate the power-dependent photoluminescence spectra from a strongly
coupled quantum dot-cavity system using a quantum master equation technique
that accounts for incoherent pumping, pure dephasing, and fermion or boson
statistics. Analytical spectra at the one-photon correlation level and the
numerically exact multi-photon spectra for fermions are presented. We compare
to recent experiments on a quantum dot-micropiller cavity system and show that
an excellent fit to the data can be obtained by varying only the incoherent
pump rates in direct correspondence with the experiments. Our theory and
experiments together show a clear and systematic way of studying

Legacy code support for production grids
In order to improve reliability and to deal with the high complexity of existing middleware solutions, today's production Grid systems restrict the services to be deployed on their resources. On the other hand end-users require a wide range of value added services to fully utilize these resources. This paper describes a solution how legacy code support is offered as third party service for production Grids. The introduced solution, based on the Grid Execution Management for Legacy Code Architecture (GEMLCA), do not require the deployment of additional applications on the Grid resources, or any extra effort from Grid system administrators. The implemented solution was successfully connected to and demonstrated on the UK National Grid Service. © 2005 IEEE
Amyloid-β(1-42) aggregation initiates its cellular uptake and cytotoxicity
The accumulation of amyloid beta peptide(1-42) (Abeta(1-42)) in extracellular plaques is one of the pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer disease (AD). Several studies have suggested that cellular reuptake of Abeta(1-42) may be a crucial step in its cytotoxicity, but the uptake mechanism is not yet understood. Abeta may be present in an aggregated form prior to cellular uptake. Alternatively, monomeric peptide may enter the endocytic pathway and conditions in the endocytic compartments may induce the aggregation process. Our study aims to answer the question whether aggregate formation is a prerequisite or a consequence of Abeta endocytosis. We visualized aggregate formation of fluorescently labeled Abeta(1-42) and tracked its internalization by human neuroblastoma cells and neurons. beta-Sheet-rich Abeta(1-42) aggregates entered the cells at low nanomolar concentration of Abeta(1-42). In contrast, monomer uptake faced a concentration threshold and occurred only at concentrations and time scales that allowed Abeta(1-42) aggregates to form. By uncoupling membrane binding from internalization, we found that Abeta(1-42) monomers bound rapidly to the plasma membrane and formed aggregates there. These structures were subsequently taken up and accumulated in endocytic vesicles. This process correlated with metabolic inhibition. Our data therefore imply that the formation of beta-sheet-rich aggregates is a prerequisite for Abeta(1-42) uptake and cytotoxicity
Neuromodulation via the Cerebrospinal Fluid: Insights from Recent in Vitro Studies
The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) occupies the brain’s ventricles and subarachnoid space
and, together with the interstitial fluid (ISF), forms a continuous fluidic network that
bathes all cells of the central nervous system (CNS). As such, the CSF is well positioned
to actively distribute neuromodulators to neural circuits in vivo via volume transmission.
Recent in vitro experimental work in brain slices and neuronal cultures has shown that
human CSF indeed contains neuromodulators that strongly influence neuronal activity.
Here we briefly summarize these new findings and discuss their potential relevance to
neural circuits in health and disease
